Rethinking Energy for Data Centers: Local Generation, Integrated Solutions

In the search for scalable energy solutions to support the rapid growth of data centers, Google is taking a notable step: co-locating a 1‑gigawatt-plus data center with its own generation site in the Texas Panhandle. The facility will primarily rely on solar and wind, supported by battery
storage, with natural gas serving as a backup rather than the primary source.

This isn’t just a project—it’s a signal. A signal that the industry is moving beyond traditional models of centralized generation and long-distance transmission toward more integrated, localized energy strategies.
Skepticism around renewables often centers on intermittency: the sun doesn’t always shine, and the wind doesn’t always blow. But that perspective misses a key point—energy doesn’t have to be consumed at the moment it’s generated. With storage, we can capture energy when conditions are favorable and shift it to when it’s needed. In many ways, this is not a new concept—it’s just a different implementation.
Consider legacy energy systems. We used to operate a coal-fired power plant in Green Bay, yet there was no coal mine on-site—or even in the state. Coal was shipped in, effectively acting as stored energy delivered to the plant. Similarly, a peaking plant near my home relies on natural gas delivered via pipeline. Again, the energy isn’t native to the site—it’s transported and stored before being converted to electricity.
What’s fundamentally different about renewables is the opportunity to break that dependency. With wind and solar, the “fuel” is already on-site. When paired with battery storage, generation and storage become localized, reducing reliance on continuous fuel delivery and creating a more self-contained energy ecosystem.
That doesn’t mean there’s a single answer to our energy challenges—far from it. The path forward will require a portfolio approach: renewables, fossil fuels, storage, and smart system design working together. The key is not choosing one over the other, but engineering the right combination for each application.
Google’s project is a compelling example of what that future can look like—integrated, resilient, and purpose-built for the demands of modern infrastructure.
